Yeah, so when I switch on my ps3 with hdmi in, I get a black screen. When I use my AV cable there is output. What's wrong and how do I fix this? I have a fatty ps3. It's not my TV or bable as I've hooked up the 360 to HDMI using same cable and slot.

I remember this issue, it's when you use once AV after you've set the PS3 to HDMI you have to reset the video settings to something. Let me go try it out on my PS3 and I'll edit this post when I've found specifically what it is.
edit: Yep, what squirrel said!

Hold down the power button till it beeps. That should reset the settings to default and it should detect the HDMI input.

Hook it up by HDMI. Hold down the power button until it beeps when turning on the system to reset the video settings. You should get a message asking if you want to use HDMI as your video output.

plug up AV, go into settings, display settings, display output settings and change to HDMI and plug in the cable?

Unplug your TV for a minute. It's an HDMI handshake issue and PS3 is finnicky. Happens to me occasionally.

This same thing happened to me once and nothing worked. I just left it on and eventually it switched. Hope something works.

Yeah, still doesn't work. But thanks for the advice all!

Yeah, I'm guessing something is screwed up in the board and there's nothing I can do.

Just so we're clear, you tried this while it was plugged into HDMI right? It won't detect the HDMI cable unless it's plugged in when you do this.

Ive fixed several PS3s with this issue, all have been slims, the solder on the HDMI socket didnt flow correctly when built and in time the socket will become dry. Quite an easy fix takes about 30 mins max, not saying that this is the problem in your case though. Most seem to happen when they have unplugged the HDMI cable after it being connected for a while, probably the force removing the lead has "cracked" the dry joints on the connector.

are you tunning the right hdmi source on your tv?

Yeah, my ps3 was hooked up for a while, then I unplugged it to take it somewhere. Is there a tutorial for this?

Yeah, there's only one and it's indicating output, but blank output.

Do you have another TV or monitor you can test it on?

I haven't had the chance to test it on another TV, but I guess I should, I'll take it over to a friend's place.

This shit happens to me everytime I turn the PS3 on. Another reason why I hardly play it. I just ordered a new Slim and I hope it doesn't give me the same problems as the launch phat.

Sounds like a handshake problem.

Try a different HDMI cable. My ps3 worked with a cable for a year, then the signal stopped for no apparent reason. I switched to a different cable, and it worked. The original cable works on everything else (blu-ray, pc and 360), but not on the ps3 anymore...

Do so at own risk, Its not hard but some soldering skills are needed, as well as a decent soldering iron, leaded solder (to make it a bit easier for you) if not lead free, some no clean solder flux and some flux cleaner. If you cant get hold of the no clean flux or flux cleaner its not ideal and will make it slightly more difficult but you can still do it without.
Dont think there is a guide, i do this kinda stuff (but more complex) for my job so is pretty straight foreward to myself. All you need to do is watch one the videos/guides on taking apart the PS3, think i used this one http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation+3+Slim+Teardown/1121/1.
When you have the main board of the PS3 apart step 27 in this guide, look under the HDMI port and you will see some solder pins coming through the underside of the board, around them should be small dome shape solder goin all around the pins. If this is a dull grey colour and/or you can see gaps between the dome and the solder pins you have a dry joint that will probably be your problem.
Put a little bit of no clean flux around the pins on the connector, this will help the solder flow as it will "clean" up the joint, you could just use your iron to heat up the original solder to make it reflow correctly, but adding small amount of solder will also help. Give it a clean with the flux cleaner and check once you have reflowed the joint it should be a nice silver dome shape now with no signs off pitting/holes near the actual pin, if not add a bit more heat from your iron for a few seconds. Repeat until you have done all the pins and re-asemmble your PS3 as per guide and it should be working.

Thanks for this! I guess I'll try to find a guide for opening up fatty ps3 and try this.

Try this. It may be your TV.

i had the hdmi port on a ps3 get toasted, same with the hdmi port on the TV it was connected to. tried hooking the PS3 up to a different TV, no go, and tried hooking up a different device to the TV's hdmi port, no go. must have been a power surge (or something) that toasted both the TV and the PS3's hdmi ports. the 2nd hdmi port on the TV works fine (with other devices). sucks. I just use component with that PS3 now.
