How To Change Snooze Time On Iphone Xr
The iPhone's alarm snooze time is 9 minutes by default, and there's no direct way of editing it in the native Clock app. This means you can't change the snooze time on your iPhone if you need those extra minutes to get up! But don't worry.
Here're 2 workarounds to do this. But first things first!
- What's the reason behind the 9 minutes snooze time?
- How to edit your iPhone's snooze time using the Clock app
- Customize the snooze time on iPhone using third-party apps
What's the reason behind the 9 minutes snooze time?
It dates back to the time when only mechanical gear clocks used to exist. Aligning the gear teeth to allow for exactly 10 minutes served as a physical limitation, which led them to choose between nine minutes or over 10 minutes.
This kicks in a biological reason which was stated in reports by people back in the 1950s. The reason which was postulated and even made sense was that 10 minutes were enough for people already in a half-drowsy state to fall back into a deep sleep.
This means they would wake-up, frustrated again, so nine minutes would be the optimum time duration to get that last-minute nap without losing themselves again in the dream world.
Another reason circulating, which sounded more logical, was that the time for the snooze function had to be the highest single-digit number.
Although, whatever the case might be, it's unclear what made Apple adopt the idea of 9 minutes as its default snooze time, especially when iPhones have no such limitations.
Regardless, if you want to change this default standard of 9 minutes, keep reading.
How to edit your iPhone's snooze time using the Clock app
Instead of changing the snooze time, you just have to set multiple alarms with longer time gaps in between. This will automatically increase your snooze time. This is the simplest workaround without downloading an app.
For example, I have to wake up at 5 am but need longer snooze time. Hence, I'll simply set multiple alarms with a longer time gap. I'll first set a warning alarm to go off at 4:45 am for an extra 15 minutes of spare time, followed by another alarm at 5 am.
Let's understand how to do it.
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap the Alarm tab at the bottom.
- Tap + in the upper right corner.
- Enter your preferred time using either the scroll wheel or the number pad.
Note : If you are using the 24-hour time format setting on your iPhone, you won't see the AM/PM slider while creating the alarm. - Once set, toggle off snooze.
- Lastly, tap Save at the top right to set the first alarm.
- Next, follow the above steps to set another alarm.
In my case, it is 5 am.
Now, this means two alarms have been set, one at 4:45 am acting as a warning alarm indicating it's almost time to get up, and another at 5 am acting as the main alarm to let you know that it's finally time to start the day.
Alternatively, you can also have a shorter snooze time. Just set multiple alarms with less time gap.
Let's consider the same example as above. If I want to wake up at 5 am but need a shorter snooze time, I'll set multiple alarms with less time gap (say 5 mins) to go off before the one set at 5 am.
Extra info: If you wake up earlier than your desired snooze time, go to the clock app and manually disable the rest of the alarms to avoid irritation.
Customize the snooze time on iPhone using third-party apps
Apart from the steps explained above, which act pretty well in altering the snooze time, many third-party apps on the App Store can help customize the snooze time. the add-on is that they offer additional features too.
I have used Alarmy for this article to explain how third-party alarm apps work:
- Download Alarmy from the App Store.
- Open the app and tap + in the bottom right.
- Tap Alarm.
- Select your desired wake-up time using the scroll wheel and tap Snooze.
- Select the Snooze time and hit done.
- Finally, tap done again to set the alarm.
- Optional : Use your recorded sound as an alarm or listen to the app's sleep sounds to fall asleep.
Extra Info: Alarmy offers a wide array of fun activities such as solving math problems, taking pictures, playing memory games, read news, and see horoscope to help wake up in the morning.
Other alarm apps that I recommend:
- Alarm Clock for Me
- The Clocks: Alarm, World Clock
- Loud Alarm Clock
Note : The steps are almost similar to change snooze time in all apps.
So, that's how you can change the snooze time on your iPhone using the in-built Clock app or third-party apps. Which third-party do you find the most useful one for yourself? Let me know in the comments.
